A pause to play... The Smashing Pumpkins

Here I am again to share with you more of the soundtrack of my life. Last Sunday was my birthday (thank you all for your lovely words!),  so, what could be more appropriate than a ode to my birth year? 1979!

On the last post of this series I told you that I grew up in the 80's but I'm more a 90's girl. Now I must add that I'm proud to have been born in the 70's! How cool? The wild seventies! My dad had long hair and beard like John Lennon, and my mom was quite an elegant hipster, rocking those bell-bottom pants and mini-skirts. One of these days I lay hands on one of their polaroids and share it with you.

1979 was quite a year, well I was born that year! So... it was super. There were a few other - not so importante - things happening, such as:

* UNESCO proclaimed 1979 as the International Year of the Child (fair enough, I was to be born!)
* Philips advertise the Compact Disc for the first time (hell, it took more than a decade for us to be using it regulary here!)
* Margaret Thatcher becomes the first female prime minister of United Kingdom
* Maria de Lurdes Pintasilgo seconds Thatcher in Europe, becoming the first female (and only to date) prime minister of Portugal
* Sony launches the Walkman
* McDonalds launches the Happy Meal (old McDonalds, again, thinking of me!)
* The Music for UNICEF Concert takes place at United Nations General Assembly in New York City

And a few other great ladies were born too: Zhang Ziyi, Norah Jones, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Kate Hudson, Sara Bareilles...

Back to the song, this is, obviously, not a band from the seventies, but from the nineties. When it comes to the soundtrack of my life, this is absolutely an unavoidable band. The album Siamese Dream was one of those cassettes that I played till it began to sound hoarse and the tape started to roll out. And, of course, this song allways sounded special to me.
